Her inspiration for becoming an artist comes from her upbringing. Katie Lou states growing up in an art friendly home, with the support of her mother, who is also an artist, helped nurture her passion.
 
Many times, in her life her health has been unpredictable, requiring several life-saving surgeries. For Katie Lou, art has always been her best form of therapy and painting is the creative outlet she goes to first. Katie wants to share her knowledge, create access to the arts, and help others through her art. She is an advocate for supporting art education, and she embraces her Anishinaabe heritage.
