Rose Shumate

Rose Schumate.jpg

Rose is an experienced black ash basket maker from the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribe. She grew up under her Mothers tutelage and now is devoting her life to refining her basket making. She and her sons Patrick and Michael harvest black ash logs near their home in Hayward Wisconsin. To process the logs into splints to make contemporary baskets her sons pound the black ash logs the old-fashioned way! The ash log is pounded until the growth rings separate. The thickest ones are split one more time, and ready to become a basket. Baskets can be made all natural or dyed with Rit Clothes Dye.

Rose Schumate passed away in May of 2020 and will be greatly missed.
